A Voice from the Eastern Door
Team Haudenosaunee and their sponsors put together a Family Fun Day on July 4th at the Kateri Hall from 10 am to 5 pm. The two main sponsors for the event were Hilltop Inflatables and Epic Night Entertainment, who provided inflatables for the family to enjoy and music for everyone to listen to throughout the day. There were also different activities set up like face painting, a mini volleyball court and soccer net to play against the athletes going to the NAIG games. Families were able to bring their children and enjoy the day for only $5 a person. There was also a BBQ lunch/dinner sold throughout the day with different treats to purchase. There were two different raffles being sold at the Family Fun Day, one being squares you could purchase for one of the Jr. B home games, the second raffle is for a beautiful Princess House knife set which was sold to the team at a discount by Connie Stowell. All the proceeds made throughout the day, and from the raffles, will go toward the teams' expenses.
It was brought to our attention that a last minute expense came up. The team's bus that has to transport them to and from the games ended up costing more. The proceeds made from the family fun day was originally supposed to help with the team member's costs while staying out in Toronto for the games. That has changed, now the team needs to come up with $1500 to pay for their transportation. If anyone is able and willing to contribute to help out our athletes travelling to the Native American Indigenous Games representing Team Haudenosaunee it would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to help with the teams' expenses you can contact one of the two Akwesasne Representatives: April Seymour at 518-651-7985 or Denise Homer at 518-651-5557.
A big Niawen Kowa goes out to all the parents and athletes who helped make the family fun day a success. Thank you to the sponsors who donated their time and services to help Team Haudenosaunee get to Toronto for the games. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Community Partnership Fund and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Community Fund were also a big help in making Akwesasne a part of Team Haudenosaunee this year. Carey Terrance also provided a van for the athletes to get to their tryouts. The Athletes from Akwesasne who are representing Team Haudenosaunee for the first year are going because of the generosity and sponsorships that were given.
