MCA PROUDLY ANNOUNCES HIRING OF NURSE PRACTITIONER

AKWESASNE MOHAWK TERRITORY – The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Wholistic Health & Wellness Program is proud to announce that a new nurse practitioner has been hired to treat patients at the Kawehno:ke Medical Clinic. Lannie Mitchell, an Akwesasne Mohawk and former MCA Community Health nurse, has returned to the community after working away for many years and serving others in her role as nurse practitioner.

"It is a major accomplishment to secure medical professionals who can meet the unique jurisdictional needs of our community and programs," said Kawehno:ke District Chief Dennis Chaussi who holds the health portfolio. "Being able to bring one of our own community members home to work and serve Akwesasne is a celebration in its own and we are grateful to have Lannie on board."

Throughout the time that Mitchell has been away from MCA and Akwesasne she has gained invaluable experience and education in nursing. She served the Ojibway People of Northwestern Ontario as a Primary Care Nurse Practitioner and later worked alongside a multidisciplinary team at the Gizhewaadiziwin Health Access Center. She conducted community clinics in the surrounding semi-remote communities of Northwestern Ontario. She worked on a retrofitted RV Mobile Clinic Unit in the Brockville area and then began work for Health Canada, which brought her to the Sandy Lake First Nation near the Manitoba border. She served this fly-in Oji-Cree community in both primary and emergency care.

Mitchell lives with her husband and two "fur babies", and looks forward to visits from her now-grown three children.

"I am excited to be back home and to use my training to support the goal of Wholistic Health for Akwesasronon," Mitchell said.

Mitchell is now available at walk-in clinics and by appointment at the Kawehno:ke Medical Clinic. Please call 613-932-5808 to learn more or to make an appointment.
