A Voice from the Eastern Door

Salmon River Central School District High School 2017 Graduation

On Friday, June 23rd, the eighty-one graduates of Salmon River Central School walked the stage to accept their high school diplomas. The evening opened with the processional march played by the Salmon River High School Band led by Cindy Healy, along with community members who came out to join. Following that, Amber Nezezon sang the Canadian National Anthem and Tennille Tuper sang the American National Anthem. Both ladies got thunderous applause after filling the arena with their powerful vocals. The Akwesasne Women Singers also performed "Sken:nen" which received wondrous feedback as well. The welcome address of the evening was spoken by Krista Walrath, and the Ohenton Karihwatehkwen followed which was recited by Jennifer DeJung. The first speech of the night was from school superintendent, Dr. Stanley Harper. "If there is one thing to remember it is to be kind to one another, use courage, wit, and ambition", was a word of advice and encouragement from Mr. Harper to the graduating students. The next speech was by valedictorian, Noreen Bautista. She discussed the importance of education and how she owes her inspiration to her grandfather.

Noreen also had words of encouragement for her classmates, "Be proud of what you have accomplished...and know that you have earned this...all of the things you have learned here can never be taken away from you."

Salutatorian, Krista Walrath also gave a speech talking about the importance of education, and stated that, 'schooling is the foundation of all knowledge'.

After the speeches commenced, academic awards and scholarships were given out to honorable students. Following that was the calling of the class and the awarding of diplomas, before they declared graduation and the class exited to the band Recessional. Congrats to the Salmon River Central class of 2017! Wishing you all the best of luck in the future.
