A Voice from the Eastern Door
(June 20, 2017) The Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club recently received a $15,000 grant from the First Nations Development Institute of Longmont, Colorado. This award will support the efforts of the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club’s Nutrition for Kids Project.
The project aims to assist 100 community children from low-income families with food for weekends and during the times when school is out. The project will begin in July and will continue through January of 2018. Any interested community members with children between the ages of 6 and 18 are invited to complete a brief application in order to participate. We are excited to offer these services to local children. Your child does not need to be a current club member of the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club to participate, but there will be an income eligibility guideline.
Children who participate will receive a parcel which will include a variety of foods that can easily be prepared by children at home. Meals provided will be nutritionally complete and will help families with providing not only food to help feed their children but will also contain information about where to seek additional resources in the community. Children will also have the opportunity to learn about Diabetes Prevention and healthy eating habits to support a healthy lifestyle as they grow. In addition, foods to be included will be sourced as much as possible from local farmers and agricultural programs.
“This project is yet another exciting way the Akwesasne Boys & Girls Club is able to provide meals to children who need them the most,” said Jessica Cree Jock, Executive Director. “In addition to receiving daily meals through our hot meal program, children will now also be able to have additional food resources on weekends. Whatever we can do to support the positive growth and development of children is something our entire organization aspires to do,” said Jessica. “We are excited that the First Nations Development Institute has chosen to help us further our positive reach to even more children.”
