A Voice from the Eastern Door

Elders Appreciation Day held at the Senior Center

On Thursday, June 15th, 2017 the Senior Center held an Elders Appreciation Day. The day started at 10 a.m. with elders having the opportunity to get their blood pressure and blood sugar checked. There were informational booths set up throughout the entire day, some of the booths that were set up were the Seven Dancers Coalition, A/CDP Prevention Program, Adult Protective Services, Three Sisters Program and Stop Domestic Violence Program. At 11 a.m. the elders had the opportunity to sit and listen to the speakers invited to speak about different topics, featuring Linda Larue and Nancy Galway. The speakers spoke to everyone in attendance about Elders abuse prevention, legal aid and estate matters.

After lunch a dance was held in the lacrosse box, featuring The River Mohawk band. The elders really enjoyed themselves and at the same time they were able to learn more about the different services that are available to them in and around Akwesasne. It was a great day to appreciate the elders of Akwesasne and enjoy being in each other's presence. The Senior Center did an excellent job in reminding our younger people exactly how much really needs to be done to make sure our elders are taken care of. The Center is an excellent place for any senior who needs help with just about anything, especially if they do not have family members close by to help. The Elders Appreciation Day was a great way to get our elders and their family members out.

There is so many different ways that our elders have made a difference for our generation and we need to acknowledge them and how they have contributed so much to our community. They should not be forgotten and always remember how important our Elders are to us.
