Position: 3 Mohawk Immersion Teachers (Pre-k – level 4)

Hours per week: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday

Work Place: The Akwesasne Freedom School

Duties

• Maintain an immersion learning environment

• To monitor students from arrival to departure; this includes recess, lunch, bathroom breaks, etc.

• Establish a trusting relationship with students

• Follow established curriculum guide as set by the A.F.S

• Participate on curriculum committee

• To establish and maintain communication with parents throughout the year

• To comply with current AFS policies and procedures

Qualifications

• Fluent Mohawk speaker with understanding of phonics in Kanien’keha

• Have patience, compassion and understanding for all children

• Experience teaching in an immersion environment

• Ability to teach outside of classroom; in the woods, at the river, in the garden, etc.

• Knowledge of traditional culture and ceremonies

• Creative, resourceful and ability to work without supervision

• Willing to learn, alongside students, skill, culture or knowledge

• Ability to work well with other teachers, to plan and coordinate lessons, recess activities, and outdoor field activities

• Must have a positive attitude and be flexible, dependable, and punctual

• Must have valid drivers’ license, insurance and valid vehicle registration

• Willingness to use personal vehicle to drive students to field activities
