A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe held their annual elections on Saturday, June 3, 2017 from 9am to 5pm in the lobby of the Tribal community building. Michael Conners Jr., the Tribal Sub-Chief won with 413 votes, followed by Ron Lafrance Jr. with 318 votes and Sharlee Thomas with 269 votes. 7 votes were considered 'Spoiled' and 12 'Void'.
For the office of Sub-Chief, Agnes 'Sweets' Jacobs won with 393 votes, Edward Smoke had 257 votes and Justin Cree had 99 votes. 9 votes were considered 'Spoiled' and 10 considered 'Void'.
Micaelee Horn won the position of Traffic Court Judge with 931 votes. This position had over 25 Write-in candidates, many receiving just one vote. A total of 26 votes were considered 'Spoiled' and 71 votes were considered 'Void'. With a large number of Void ballots, the voter may have been confused with the voting process itself or for the position they were voting for. A Void ballot means the voter misspelled the name, or they checked a box and wrote in a name.
The Election Board will officially certify the election results after a five-day period, pending any appeals and announce the official results as soon as they are certified.
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe has a total of 9,832 eligible voters. For the position of Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Chief, 1,063 people voted, up from 922 people voting for the position of Tribal Chief in 2016. Approximately 10% of all eligible voters chose to cast their ballot in the 2017 Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal elections.
