Boys and girls lacrosse, softball, baseball all add wins to 2017 records
Massena boys varsity lacrosse stopped St. Lawrence’s run toward an undefeated season and went on to lose to Salmon River by a single goal in a high-scoring bout.
On May 8, Massena dished out St. Lawrence’s first loss of the season, in a game that ended 13-12. St. Lawrence was leading by three goals going into the fourth quarter before Massena took over. The Larries opened the game with four unanswered goals in the last 4:42 of the first quarter, leaving the score 5-2 going into the second stanza. Massena then rallied with three straight goals, tying the game with 4:46 on the clock after a goal by Isaiah Cree, assisted by Kainen Francis-Thompson. St. Lawrence came back with a three-goal surge with both sides posting additional markers, leaving the halftime scoreboard at 8-6. St. Lawrence pulled ahead 10-7 in the third quarter. Francis-Thompson punched one in for Massena to open the final frame, with St. Lawrence returning to a three-goal lead with 4:20 left in regulation. Francis-Thompson then fired in two more goals, bringing the score to St. Lawrence 11, Massena 10 with just under three minutes left. Kyran Sunday launched the game-tying goal on a play set up by Blake Premo with just over a minute remaining, then put Massena in the lead with 34 seconds to go, with a helper from Hunter Pyke. St. Lawrence answered with 13 seconds on the clock, forcing overtime. With 1:53 to go in sudden death, Premo got hold of the ball and passed to JP Chauvin, who won the game. Hayden Hoerner finished with 10 saves for Massena.
On Friday, host Massena fell to Salmon River by a single goal in a high-scoring nailbiter, 18-17. Massena quickly jumped ahead 4-1, and the teams went back and forth for the remainder of play. Salmon’s Rowisonkies Barnes broke a 16-16 tie with just over a minute left after taking a pass from Isaiah Skidders. Skidders pushed SRC’s lead to 18-16 just under 30 seconds later. Sunday brought Massena within one goal of forcing OT with just 13 seconds on the clock, but their offense wasn’t able to follow through in the last sliver of regulation. Skidders had a powerhouse showing with six goals and five assists. Barnes ended up with six goals and an assist. Treyton Mitchell scored twice. Trevan David and Cash Mitchell each scored once and assisted two plays. Cobie Cree scored once with an assist and Memphis Mitchell netted a singleton. John Jacobs turned aside 21 shots.
For Massena, Cree scored seven goals. Francis-Thompson scored four goals. Chauvin had two goals with an assist. Pyke had a pair of goals. Premo had a goal and four assists. Sunday notched a goal and three helpers. Nick Morrell tallied a single assist. Hoerner fashioned 15 saves.
The Massena girls varsity lacrosse team posted convincing wins over Potsdam and Ogdensburg. On May 9, host Massena turned back Potsdam 10-5. Katie MacCuaig led Massena’s balanced effort with two goals and an assist. Blayke Gibson, Abigail Johnson and Julia Blair each scored two goals. Kyrsten Stone, who tallied an assist, and Meg Wilmshurst each scored single goals. Jenna Oakes assisted one play. Gisele Todd made 13 saves. Potsdam goals came from Daysia Wagner, Josie Brusso, Mattie Tremper, Alana McDonald and Erica Sloan. Hannah Gray blocked nine shots.
Two nights later, Massena downed Heuvelton 18-3.
Massena varsity softball’s week saw the squadron posted three wins out of four games, which included splitting a doubleheader.
After defeating St. Lawrence 7-1 on May 9, Massena went on to even a doubleheader with Malone. Massena won what was the remainder of a previously suspended game 11-10, but Malone won the second encounter 6-5, each bout ending with walkoff wins. Amber Thomas scored the winning run thanks to a wild pitch, clinching Massena’s victory in the tail end of a game that had been suspended April 25. That contest also ended with Thomas batting two hits, and Natasha Gardner and Camryn Peets also recording pairs of hits. In the full game, Massena’s Skyler Trumble and Kelly Southwick each had three hits.
Two nights later, Massena ended host Ogdensburg’s shot at an undefeated season in a 3-0 contest. Thomas struck out 12 batters and allowed three hits. For Ogdensburg, Calee Zulauf and Rileigh Planty joined forces to pitch for two hits with no earned runs. Massena’s runs came in the third inning after two outs on a walk, two infield errors and a Kelly Southwick single. Mikenna Merry tallied the game’s other hit.
Massena’s varsity baseball team broke even on a pair of doubleheaders. They beat Gouverneur 15-1 and 9-0 on May 9 and lost to Watertown 8-2 and 9-5 on May 13.
