A Voice from the Eastern Door

9th Annual Akwesasne Cancer Support Group 5 Mile Walk/Run

The 9th annual Cancer Awareness 5 Mile Walk/Run took place on May 7, 2017, at the Generations Park walking trail. The event started at 9 a.m. and ended around 1 p.m. Although the weather was not the nicest, it did not stop anyone from participating in the walk/run. Some participants had pledge sheets while others just showed up on the day of the event to show their support to a family member, friend or, they themselves who were survivors of cancer. Anyone who had a pledge sheet got a free sweatshirt, while anyone who showed up and participated was gifted a t-shirt.

There were several raffles during the event, which were all flower raffles. Some lucky participants left the event with quite a few gifts and prizes. All the money that was raised during the event, and on the pledge sheets, will go towards helping someone who is battling cancer. There was also a Mother’s Day Raffle they had just finished, with all the proceeds of that raffle also going towards helping someone in need. The money that the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group raises helps Akwesasne community members on both sides of the border when they need help with travel or medical expenses while battling cancer. On behalf of anyone who has dealt with cancer either themselves or their family or friends, thank you so much to anyone who participated in the event or bought a raffle ticket. To the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group, who dedicates their time and energy to make it all possible, thank you.
