Massena’s varsity softball team won a doubleheader against Salmon River before going on to beat Canton. Meanwhile, the varsity baseball team dropped a decision to Canton but defeated Casselman in a no-hitter.
On May 3 in Massena, the softball team beat Salmon River in the twin bill match 21-3 and 15-5. In the first game where Massena had 18 hits, the teams were tied 1-1 after the first inning before Massena unleashed a 10-run assault in the second that included a two-run homer off the bat of Natasha Gardner and doubles from Alyssa Eubank and Sydnee Carroll that cleared the bases. Brittany Condon pitched two and two-thirds of an inning to earn the win. She struck out two and walked six. Amber Thomas pitched relief, fanning five with zero walks. Lauren Martin pitched for the loss. Eubank went 4-5 at the bat with two doubles and two runs. Mikenna Merry went 3-4 batting with a double and two runs. In addition to her showing on the mound, Thomas batted for a single, a double and crossed home plate once. For Salmon, Ali Hart batted a lead-off double and scored once. Tiffany Connors and Nidia Dearmayero each had singles. Tekaritha George and Martin each scored single runs in the third.
In the late game, Massena sent eight runners home in their first at-bat. Thomas pitched for the win, sitting down four batters and scattering five hits. Martin pitched for a strikeout and four walks, earning a second loss. Thomas went 4-4 at bat with two doubles and two runs. Skyler Trumble batted 3-4 with three runs scored. Gardner went 2-3, batting a double and crossing home plate once. Kelly Southwick hit a double and scored three runs. For Salmon River, Jenny DeJung went 2-3 with two runs. Dearmayero had two hits and a run. Katrina Oakes had a single and came around for a run.
The next night, Massena beat hosts Canton. While leading 6-4 after six innings, Massena batted an eight-run rally in the seventh inning for a 14-7 final score. Condon earned the win with one strikeout and no walks. Carroll led Massena’s offense, going 4-5 at bat with a double, three runs and an RBI. Merry went 3-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Trumble had two hits, scored twice and had three RBIs.
The varsity baseball team started their week with a loss to Canton but avenged themselves the next day. They lost to Canton 7-6 on May 3. Massena held a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning but were routed by a three-run Canton rally. Nate Bressard was saddled with the loss. He threw seven strikeouts and five walks.
The following day saw Massena claim a big win over Casselman, Ontario. Drew McMahon, who struck out nine batters, was denied a perfect game due to an error in the sixth inning, instead earning a no-hitter. Massena scored two runs in their first two at-bats and that was it. It was their first win of the year. James Donnelly batted a two-run single in the first inning. Bressard knocked a two-run double in the fifth inning. Alex Rusaw hit a single and crossed home plate twice. Chris Paige had a single with one run scored.
