AKWESASNE – On Onerahtókha/April 24, 2017; Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Clerk Betty Roundpoint conducted the swearing-in for incoming Tribal Election Board Member Theresa A. Connors. The short ceremony was held in the Tribal Council's Boardroom located in the Community Building at 412 State Route 37 in Akwesasne.
Connor's appointment to the Election Board follows the adoption of TCR 2016-77 that expanded the Election Board to no less than five (5) members. The resolution is intended to ensure a uniform and consistent oversight of all tribal elections and referendums.
She will fill a position that was recently vacated until the position's term ends on Seskehkó:wa/September 15, 2018. Until then she joins Joseph Bowen-Brewer, Sheila Loran, Debra Martin and Hope Wheelock on the five-member board.
To serve on the Election Board, members must meet the criteria of an eligible tribal voter. Following their individual appointments each member helps ensure, direct and manage the security and integrity of caucus, elections and referendums in accordance with the Election and Referendum Ordinance.
The Election Board reminds tribal voters that the annual Tribal Caucus will be held on Saturday, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 6, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community Building Lobby for the positions of one (1) Tribal Chief, one (1) Tribal Sub-Chief, and one (1) Traffic Court Judge #2.
Nominees must accept or refuse the nomination at the time of the Caucus or by the close of business on Wednesday, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 10th; as well as sign a release authorizing a criminal background check and are responsible for taking a drug test within three (3) business days.
