♪ "One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock, rock, Five, six, seven o'clock, eight o'clock, rock, Nine, ten, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock, rock, We're gonna rock around the clock tonight." ♪ That is what people did Friday night as part of the 97.3 CKON Sock Hop. Greasers and dolls with poodle skirts filled the dance floor of the former IGA building as people enjoyed listening to rockin' tunes from the 1950s. There were four formal dance competitions that evening, which included the twist, the pony, the jitterbug and a hula-hoop contest. Barbara A. Lazore, Junior Ransom, Catherine Cook, Rosemary Bonaparte and Stacey Holcomb judged all the fly cats and kittens that evening.
As the dances were announced people lined up to register for the competition. Like a scene out of Grease, dancers took to the floor showing off their hip shaking moves hoping to catch the eye of the judges. CKON Greasers Reen Cook and High Tower kept people's toes tapping with a great collection of oldies. CKON's Misty In the Morning dressed in a poodle skirt and with the lucky bucket in hand made her way to the large crowd of people selling 50/50 raffle tickets. Rows of chairs lined the outer perimeter of the dance floor for those who wanted to chair dance the evening away. Many vendors were also present at the event selling delicious food and various hand crafted goods. The CKON Sock Hop; a drug and alcohol free event for those 18 and older, was a huge success providing fun, smiles and the opportunity for memory making for all who attended. The Sock Hop was made a reality with the hard work and support of the CKON staff and the Akwesasne Communication Society. Congratulations to all the fly cats and dolls who won the dance competitions!
