One Survivor’s Thoughts: What I Wish I Knew Then & What I Know Now

Flashback to when it happened

I wish I knew….

• That the assault was not my fault.

• That I wouldn’t be judged by family and friends, others.

• How to drink responsibly and know my limits.

• To trust my instincts.

• To stay and leave with the same group of friends while at a party or the bar.

• How to report it as soon as possible so that it reduces the chances of that person assaulting someone else.

• But most importantly I wish I knew how to love and respect myself.

What I know now….

• The effects of Sexual Assault has on one’s self; physically, emotionally and mentally.

• Recognizing the red flags and warning signs of Sexual Assault.

• The process of reporting an assault.

• That you don’t have to get drunk just to have a “good time.”

• How to keep not only myself safe but others as well while at a party or the bar.

Lastly, now that time has passed since it happened I know …

How to love and respect myself by leading a healthier lifestyle.
