A Voice from the Eastern Door
Massena's varsity boys lacrosse team's week had them coming back strong after a loss to Salmon River, ending a three-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the girl's squad motored past Ogdensburg. The softball team had their opening day lead washed away in a rainstorm, but returned to the diamond to claim their next match.
The boys lacrosse contingent dropped a 17-10 contest to Salmon River on April 11. SRC jumped ahead 7-1 at the end of the opening quarter and never looked back.
Massena's Kainen Francis-Thompson, Jake Sheets and Gage Fiacco all scored twice. Francis-Thompson also assisted two plays. Hunter Pyke, Isaiah Cree, J.P. Chauvin and Blake Premo, who tallied two helpers, each scored once.
On the Salmon side, Isaiah Skidders had a game-high six goals and one assist. Rowisonkies Barnes had four goals and three assists. Talon Thompson (one assist) and Cobie Cree each scored twice. Cash Mitchell scored a goal with three assists. Treyton Mitchell scored once and assisted once. Blaze Benedict and Myles Jacobs each had two assists.
The following night, Massena recovered from the loss with a 16-4 win over visiting Potsdam. Massena scored five unanswered first quarter goals, which gave them the only lead they would need to win the game.
Francis-Thompson scored three times and had one assist. Kyran Sunday tallied four assists. Cree scored twice. Jack Loran assisted three plays. Chauvin scored a game-high four goals and one assist. Nick Morrell scored four times. Casey Hooper scored once and Blake Premo had a single assist. Devon Jolley had nine saves for his first varsity win.
Potsdam's Jeremiah Charleston, Cam Talcott, Sean O'Gorman and Keenan O'Gorman scored their goals. Thomas McCabe turned aside seven shots.
The girls team also enjoyed a big win over hosts Ogdensburg, 17-5 on April 12. Massena had won the game by the halftime buzzer, having pulled ahead 13-5 after two stanzas. Kayla Hinkley scored four goals with an assist. Julia Blair, Blayke Gibson, Kyrsten Stone and Katie MacCuaig each struck twice. Meg Wilmshurst, Jenna Oakes, Katelyn Kennedy and Mikenna LaPage all scored once. Giselle Todd covered the net for eight saves.
For OFA, Hanna Richardson was the leading scorer with three goals. Kelsi Donaldson and Caroline Lalone each scored once. Brionna Porter made 14 saves.
After making a serious comeback in their season opener, Mother Nature stole what could have been the first win of the year for the Massena varsity softball team. Playing St. Lawrence Central on April 11, Massena trailed 5-0 in the first inning, but over the next three battled to take a 9-8 lead. In the bottom of fifth inning with Massena at bat, the bases loaded and one out, the umpires called the game when a storm blew in. The game could be rescheduled for May.
The next day, Massena refused to open their season on a sour note and posted a 12-8 win over hosts Gouverneur. While trailing 8-7 in the top of the seventh inning, Massena came back with a five-run rally. Amber Thomas, Skyler Trumble and Mikenna Merry opened at the bat with singles. Sydnee Carroll followed with a double, then Kelly Southwick ended the rally with a single. Trumble batted three singles throughout the bout. Thomas went 4-4 at the plate with a double. Merry, Carroll and Alyssa Eubank all had two hits. Thomas also pitched for the win.
On the Gouverneur side, Alicia LaBow hit a home run. Tory Hartle had three hits. Jasmine Mattice, Shea Mousow and Madison Cook each posted two hits.
