Massena boys lacrosse trades a win for two losses

After downing Saranac Lake 14-8, Massena boys varsity lacrosse narrowly slid to St. Lawrence and then dropped another game to Bethlehem.

Hosting Saranac Lake on April 3, Massena came back from trailing at the half to win by six goals, a day after falling 15-10 to Canton. Saranac Lake squeaked ahead 4-3 after the first quarter and maintained that advantage to 7-6 at the half. Massena returned to the field in the third stanza with a 4-1 run and blasted in four unanswered goals in the closing frame. Isaiah Cree reeled off a game-high five goals in the second half. Kainen Francis scored four goals with four helpers. Kyran Sunday scored twice and assisted once. Blake Premo scored a goal and an assist. Gage Fiacco netted a lone goal and Jake Sheets had a single assist. Hayden Hoerner manned the crease for 14 saves. Saranac Lake’s Emery Swanson scored three goals and an assist. Ward Walton made 22 saves.

Three nights later, Massena narrowly fell to visiting St. Lawrence Central 11-10. Massena quickly drew a 3-0 lead, but were tied 3-all by the end of the opening quarter. SLC crept ahead 6-5 at the half and were ahead 8-6 entering the fourth quarter. Massena came back to lead 10-9 with less than 30 seconds to go, giving up a goal with less than 3 seconds on the clock, forcing overtime. SLC’s Luke Collins took control of the ball and won the game for his team 21 seconds into sudden death. For Massena, Francis paced the offense with five goals. Cree scored twice and assisted two plays. Sunday and JP Chauvin each had a goal and an assist. Nick Morrell scored one goal and Blake Premo had two assists. Hoerner blocked 11 shots.

On April 8, Massena lost 13-7 to Bethlehem in Central Square. Francis led Massena’s offense with three goals.
