Tribal Caucus Scheduled for May 6th

AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Election Board will be holding the annual Tribal Caucus on Saturday, Onerahtohkó:wa/ May 6, 2017. There are three (3) positions open for nominations: one (1) Tribal Chief, one (1) Tribal Sub-Chief, and one (1) Traffic Court Judge.

The Tribal Caucus will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. in the lobby of the Tribal Community Building, located at 412 State Route 37 in Akwesasne, New York. It will begin with nominations for each respective position.

In accordance with the Tribal Election and Referendum Ordinance, nominators must:

Be at least eighteen (18) years of age,

Be an enrolled member of the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe,

Reside in the United States or in the U.S. portion of Akwesasne for at least six months immediately prior to the election, and

Have their name on the most current eligible voters list.

Nominees can accept or refuse the nomination during the Tribal Caucus, or by the close of business on Wednesday, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 10, 2017. The ‘un-official’ list of candidates will be read at the conclusion of the caucus, as well as publicly posted by Friday, Onerahtohkó:wa/May 12, 2017.

All nominees must sign a release authorizing a criminal background check and are responsible for taking a drug test within three (3) business days of the Tribal Caucus. The Election Board is not responsible for any nominee’s failure to meet this requirement prior to posting the unofficial list of candidates.

The ‘official’ list of all candidates will be made available two (2) weeks after the Tribal Caucus on Saturday, Onerahtohkó:wa/ May 20, 2017.

The Tribal Election will be held from 9:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Ohiarí:ha/June 3, 2017 in the Community Building Lobby.
