MCA's HOUSING DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF EIGHT NEW APARTMENT HOMES

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Department of Housing is proud to announce the completion of two four-plex apartment buildings that will provide new, quality homes for eight families beginning on April 1st. The red ribbon was cut to officially "open" the new homes today, March 21st, with the community invited to an open house and viewing.

"The Dept. of Housing staff is proud to see the completion of this project," said Housing Director Heather Phillips. "Having new housing to offer the community is always exciting for us and we hope the new families enjoy their new homes."

Each home features two bedrooms and:

• Waterproof laminate flooring

• Washer & dryer connections

• Ample parking

• And for the first time, the Dept. of Housing has installed in-floor heating and central air.

The units were built with energy efficiency in mind, as well as special needs. Two of the eight units are considered special needs housing and feature walk-in bathtubs.

The project was funded through a loan from the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation, in support of First Nations housing development.

"There is a definite need for housing in our community that Council is committed to addressing," said Chief Darryl Lazore, Housing Portfolio holder. "We are grateful for the opportunities that allow us to move projects like this forward."

The buildings are located on Whoville Road in the district of Tsi Snaihne, and two additional three-plex units are already scheduled to be constructed across the road beginning this spring, featuring two 3-bedroom apartments and four 2-bedroom apartments. This second project is possible through a grant from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) and will provide homes for six more Akwesasne families when they're completed next spring.

In order to plan for additional future projects, the Dept. of Housing requests that any community members who are currently in need of housing please stop by their office at Admin 3 in Kana:takon (corner of Hilltop Drive and First Street). Please be sure your file is up to date so that accurate numbers can identify where needs are high.

The Dept. of Housing can be reached by phone at 613-575-2250 Ext. 2300. For general inquiries, please email [email protected].
