A Voice from the Eastern Door
Protectors' Fire Ongoing in Akwesasne
Here in Akwesasne, you may have noticed the fire pit and trailer set up across the road from Twin Leaf Convenience and Gas. This was set up as a safe place for everyone in Akwesasne and surrounding communities. Jesse Beeson is in charge of this along with the help of Steven Thompson and many other community members.
"We wanted to bring all the protectors who have visited or haven't visited Standing Rock together, to have a safe place to go and talk, go over ideas, and discuss the battles we face on each of our own territories," said Steven.
There is always someone there to maintain the area and make sure there is wood to stock the fire. This fire was created to bring unity not only amongst the people of Akwesasne, but those from all surrounding communities. It is also a contribution to Native Nations from all over the country, to show support and unity to those at Standing Rock, and all over the world who are doing their part. The protectors' fire is open to everyone who wants to come out, listen to others stories, and unite.
"A few days ago we had about twenty five people here. Kids were running around and playing lacrosse, and we had corn soup over the fire. It's all about uniting the community and bringing people together," said Julius Beeson. "By having this, it is continuing the fight to protect Mother Earth for future generations, and to stop the dependence on fossil fuels".
