A Voice from the Eastern Door

Niawen

Acknowledging our community members who donated their time, energy and generous donations to the seniors at the Sweetgrass Manor in Kana:takon – niawenkowa!

The seniors have upgraded their Common Room, which is a focal point at the manor in which individual or group activities have taken place over the years.

Examples are: individual residents purchase puzzles to put together as a group, glue them together, and place them in frames. These pictures are then hung in the hallways to brighten up the facility.

Due to the Common Room being in need of an upgrade, residents took it upon themselves, as a group, to ask community members to donate any resource and time that they may have available.

As a result of this call-out, the St. Regis Recreation donated paint, which was delivered by Blue and Laura Thompson. Some of the senior residents removed a ceiling wallpaper border, mudded, and sanded the walls. Casey Swamp from Swamp's Performance and his family stepped up to paint the ceilings and walls.

Also a beautiful couch and loveseat were donated by Cass Terrance, and also to acknowledge Keith Herne for helping with the delivery.

A grand electric fireplace was donated by Brass Horse – Dave Mainville/Karson Mitchell. Ashley and Carey Terrance donated a 55" flat screened TV. And Mini Mart donated the wall mount – Wallace and Lynn Thompson.

Due to safety reasons the Common Room was in great need of an upgrade.

The Common Room is used for social get-togethers that get residents to mingle. Also monthly birthdays are celebrated with a "special" meal, which is paid for by participating residents and also prepared by them. It's a way of our seniors to be acknowledged.

Last winter, an arts and crafts project took place once a week for 12 weeks in the Common Room for any resident that wanted to participate.

Niawen to the St. Regis Recreation for providing these sessions, and to Laura Thompson, Brad Lazore, and Louise White for volunteering their time.

Another get-together is when a resident will purchase Tim Horton's coffee and donuts – what a treat, especially when the power goes out!

New Year's Eve we gather to celebrate the in-coming year with a buffet provided by the residents. This year we were entertained by Mr. Sharrow strumming his guitar and singing in his Neil Young voice!

Just a shout-out to all who have helped us feel special in any way.

Niawenkowa to you all!

The Residents of Sweetgrass Manor, Kana:takon
