A Voice from the Eastern Door

Letter to the Editor

Once again the SRMT Monthly meeting held on March 4, 2017 was filled with much information. We had presentations regarding our youth who attended the USET conference, Sewakwatho and Native Connections, all of which were very informative. When New Business time came a very lively and sometime accusatory conversation took place concerning a very nasty anonymous letter that has been received by tribal members. This letter stated some very serious accusations against our three chiefs! I can neither confirm nor deny any of the accusations as I stated in the meeting that NONE of the Elders Benefit Committee members had anything to do with this latest letter. From the contents of the letter, my best guess is that our chiefs have greatly upset an employee of the Tribe because who else would have the exposure to know enough to make those accusations. Like I said it is only a guess. There was a motion made for an investigation to be done on where the letter came and I for one (as I have been accused of being the author) welcome it. As I stated in the meeting, my problem with the letter is that I have learned from my many years (whether I am considered “Old or Elder”) that behind rumors there is usually some degree of truth and if there is only 1 per cent of truth to this letter our community has a problem! It is because of this concern I want the community to know that because of the lack of faith we have in our leadership to follow our Procedure Act or uphold our TCRs, which are our laws, we now have a Recall Petition going around.
