Akwesasne Women Get Ready to March on Washington

The Women's March on Washington is a grassroots effort comprised of dozens of independent coordinators at the state level. The Women's March is a Human Rights march from the Lincoln Memorial to the White House to show our strength, power and courage and demonstrate our disapproval of the new president and his values in a peaceful march.

The March is scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2017 with a rally beginning at 10:00am and ending at 1:15pm. The March itself will begin marching at 1:15pm.

According to media outlets, there are more bus permits registered for January 21 than the day Trump's Inauguration on January 20th.

The WMW is an evolving effort originally founded by white women. Recognizing the need to be truly inclusive, the National Co-Chairs and Organizers were established to reflect a balanced representation. The team of organizers and volunteers are committed to ensuring that the march reflects women and femme expressive people of all backgrounds.

Floanne Benedict is Akwesasne's local organizer, working with Maryanne Asta, Woodstock, NY, to transport over 55 women to join in the March to formally protest his inauguration as commander-in-chief.

There are women on the page who have said that the march is not inclusive enough, and that they don't want an event organized by white women. An organizer acknowledged the criticism but stressed that the women who are organizing are from different racial and religious backgrounds. Adding to this controversy was the original name: organizers have changed the name from Million Woman March to the Women's March.
