A Voice from the Eastern Door
Both Akwesasne teams were doing very well in the Massena Broomball League both winning games at will – some blowouts. But when they hooked up last Sunday for their first game versus each other it was a fast paced game with the Ice Pigs coming out on top 2-0. Ryan Jacobs scored both goals in the win.
The game started off flying with the Chiefs hitting the Ice Pigs net right off the opening faceoff. Goalie Jake Dumas was called on to make big saves. In one instance he was caught out of position and the Chiefs fired into the open net but Dumas got the trapper up and knocked it away.
The Chiefs then moved the ball up the ice to the Pig's zone and peppered goalie Evan Cree with shot after shot. He also made some big stops. There aren't many finesse plays in this sport and the majority of the shots on goal are blasts from the outside. But the rivalry between the Akwesasne teams brought out drop passes and polished setups around the net.
Jacobs scored one goal in each one of the two periods.
The two teams don't meet again until early February and both teams play every Sunday evening at the Massena Arena.
