Helping kids get fit or teaching them to get fit is the aim of the Iakwa'shatse Youth Fitness Group and members of the community came together last Saturday to help raise money for their program.
A benefit hockey tournament was held on Kawehnoke and four teams laced up the skates for the cause. Teams were Akwesasne Tire, St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police, Big Boys and Heavy "C's" with Akwesasne Tire taking home the championship.
Each member of the championship team was given medals and these were designed by Evan Cree Traditional Lacrosse.
The Iakwa'shatse (We are Strong) Youth Fitness Group promotes fitness through a variety of activities. Last year they held a Fitness Camp on Kawehnoke and their work with the youth of the community is invaluable to the kids in pursuit of their athletic dreams.
