A Voice from the Eastern Door
Over the course of the last few weeks, the St. Regis Mohawk School and Salmon River Central School have been holding various events to celebrate their annual Native American Day tradition. The first events were in the Salmon River Elementary, where they had a social dance hosted by the Native North American Traveling College, and a story telling by Perry Ground from Onondaga. The following week the St. Regis Mohawk School got to participate in a social dance as well, and also had the story time. Bear Fox was also at the St. Regis Mohawk School performing a concert for the students to watch.
Early last week, Salmon River Middle School and High School were able to join in on the celebration. The students were shown two films in the auditorium. One was by the Salmon River Central Native Film class called "Origins of Clans", and the other was called "Ohero:kon - Under the Husk" by Katsitsionni Fox. There was also a presentation by Perry Ground about "Rethinking Thanksgiving," where he discussed some history about the truth behind Thanksgiving and Christopher Columbus. The middle school also had a social dance in the gymnasium. The high schoolers were able to watch a presentation by the Akwesasne Cultural Restoration Program from the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe about Traditional Medicines and Hunting/Trapping. All of these events were sponsored by Salmon River Title VII Program and the Salmon River Mohawk Club.
