Massena Sports Wrap Up: Soccer and Volleyball End Season

The Massena boys and girls varsity soccer seasons came to an end in the NYSPHAA regional playoffs, while the volleyball team dropped their first game of the year but will still advance to regional play.

The girls fell 4-0 to Section 3 champs Jamesville-DeWitt and the boys team 5-0 to Section 2 champs Queensbury.

In the girls game, played Nov. 5 in Ogdensburg, Massena netminder Mikenna Merry kept 21 scoring attempts out of the Massena net.

Elena Haarer, Alex Catanzarite (two goals) and Lainey Foti scored.

The boys team dropped their contest three nights earlier in Colonie.

Matt Ricciardelli and Luke Geczy each scored twice.

Volleyball

The volleyball team suffered their first loss of the year after a second straight perfect regular season. Chateaugay beat them 3-2 for the overall Section 10 title. Massena retains their Class A title and were to have competed in regionals on Nov. 8 at SUNY Potsdam.

In the Chateaugay contest, Tatum Lafrance, winner of the Patti Baldwin award and MVP, had 21 service points, 17 assists, seven kills, and two blocks.

Mckenzee Lazore had 11 service points, nine assists, two blocks and four kills.

Tianna Back had seven service points and three kills.

Jenna Tarbell had what Coach Margaret Farrell described as “an outstanding defensive game” with 11 digs.

Brittany Condon and Alyssa Eubank had eight service points each. Eubank also logged seven kills and three blocks.

Gabby Durant had seven kills and two blocks.

“Tough loss, but so proud of my girls,” the coach said following the match. “I have seen such improvement in so many parts of the game this season, they are great young ladies that I love being around everyday. I want to thank the parents of each of the girls on the Massena team because they have raised polite, hard-working, talented young ladies. Shout out to all the support in the stands too.”
