A Voice from the Eastern Door
Last Monday was the annual St. Regis Village wide Halloween event. The streets were flooded with members of the Akwesasne community of all ages dressed in costumes to celebrate the holiday. There were tents giving out candy and goodies all lining the streets, that kids could trick or treat at. Early in the evening witches were dancing at the "Y" in St. Regis to old and new music to get everyone excited and ready to kick off the night. Hidden golden tickets were attached to some of the candy given away that night. If you were one of the lucky ones to receive a ticket, you were given a loot bag as a prize (donated by the Thompson family).
At the Village Currency Exchange people were able to get pizza, hot dogs, hot chocolate, and warm up from the cold night. There was also a prize table with lots of items donated by local businesses within the community, including tickets to see the Montreal Canadiens play (donated by Carter Jack Marina, Turtle Island Promotion, and St. Regis Recreation). Boxes and canned food were also being donated by people of the village that would be divided amongst the church and "Santa's Helpers" to help out the community for the holiday season approaching.
There were two decorating contests taking place, one for the best-decorated house, and one for the best decorated wagon. Some of the decorated houses were photo locations for the kids to have their picture taken with spooky and frightening scenery. The wagons were used to transport people from house to house while they went trick or treating, and to stay warm from the cold fall wind.
This annual event is put on as a way to bring in the community and work together to make sure that Halloween is a safe and fun time for everyone.
