The Massena Central varsity boys and girls soccer closed their regular seasons and are ready for playoffs, the swim team extended their winning streak to five and the football team dropped an interleague contest.
Soccer
The girls soccer team closed their regular season on a positive note with a 2-0 win over Salmon River in overtime on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
Julia Blair and Nova Lagrow booted Massena’s two goals, with respective assists going to Kelly Southwick and Maddie Mailhot. Mikenna Merry had two saves. Nidia Dearmayero denied 16 shots for Salmon River.
They were to have began playoffs Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. against Malone at Potsdam Central School.
The boys soccer team came up short in their last two regular season games.
On Oct. 20, they lost to Potsdam 4-2 at home. James Donnelly and Raphael LeBlanc came up with Massena’s goals in the first half. LeBlanc and Casey Hooper split goalie detail for a combined six saves. Potsdam’s Daniel Caamano came up with three goals and an assist.
Football
Massena, the defending sectional champs, were to have opened their playoffs Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. against Malone at Potsdam Central School, after press deadline.
The varsity football team lost a Section 10-7 crossover game on Oct. 22, falling 42-12 to Beekmantown.
Montana Pierce started at quarterback, rushing 114 yards on 17 tries and ran in one touchdown, also passing 12-26 for 147 yards with one touchdown pass.
Michael Gardner rushed one touchdown and caught four passes for 27 yards.
Pierce’s touchdown run was in the first quarter from six yards out at 8:29. A PAT kick missed. In the second quarter at 5:37, Pierce passed to Michael Brown for a 45-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion attempt failed.
Beekmantown’s Alex Archer ran for 207 yards (306 total) and scored four touchdowns.
Massena will close their regular season Oct. 28 at home against Tupper Lake, a makeup game.
Swimming
On Oct. 20, the swimmers extended their winning streak to five meets with a 62-32 win over Salmon River.
Keely Thompson-Cook swam to a second place in the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:48.39, teamed with Rebecca Lobdell, Madison Cusworth and Destiny Lavare. Thompson-Cook notched individual third place finishes in the 500-meter freestyle endurance run (6:59.46) and the 200-meter freestyle (2:31.89).
Olivia Todd and Abby Elman paced the team with two respective individual wins. Todd won the 200-meter freestyle in 2:25.75 and the 500-meter freestyle in 6:28.10. Elman was the top finisher in the 100-meter freestyle in 1:02.13 and the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:18.59. Other Massena firsts included Rowan Mayette in the 200-meter individual medley (2:40.29), Sydnee Carroll in the 50-meter sprint freestyle (28.6 seconds), Sheyenne Hays in the 100-meter (1:09.91) and Callie Dow in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:13.52).
Two nights earlier, the team bested St. Lawrence Central 51-43. Thompson-Cook swam to a third in the 200-meter medley relay in 2:22.76, along with Danielle Eggleston, Peyton Brown and Kimberly Kaye. Thompson-Cook also swam the 100-meter freestyle in 1:07.43, and was among four-person contingents that clinched third in the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:46.51 and finished the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:09.98.
Massena swimmers placed first in all but three races. Elman paced the 100-meter freestyle (1:01.22) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.47). Mayette won the 200-meter individual medley in 2:39.04, Sydnee Carroll the 50 freestyle in 28.23 seconds, Hays the 100-meter butterfly in 1:09.87 and Dow in 100-meter backstroke in 1:17.12.
Dow, Elman, Hays and Carroll bested 200-meter medley relay in 2:10.32. Hayes, Mayette, Carroll and Todd won the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:00.44.
