Massena Sports Wrap Up

The Massena volleyball and football teams continued their thus-far undefeated 2016 seasons. Meanwhile, the girls soccer and swim teams added two wins to their records and the boys soccer team dropped their one match for the week.

Volleyball

On Sept. 23, Massena played their closest game of the year so far against Chateaugay, taking a 3-2 win. Massena won the first set 25-14, then lost the next two 17-25 and 14-25. They regained their foothold afterward with 25-15 and 25-21 wins. Tianna Back served 10 points with seven kills and 17 digs. Mckenzee Lazore had seven service points, 12 assists and seven kills. Tatum LaFrance had 17 assists, four blocks and four kills. Jenna Tarbell served seven points with 19 digs. Gabby Durant recorded seven kills and two blocks, which Coach Maggie Farrell described as "a great presence at the net."

Two nights earlier against Tupper Lake, the Massena girls won 3-0 with scores of 25-9, 25-9 and 25-11. Lazore served 15 points with seven assists for four kills. Tianna Back had 14 service points and five kills. Jenna Tarbell and Alyssa Eubank each served nine points. LaFrance assisted 11 times.

On Sept. 19, Massena bested Brushton-Moira 3-0 with 25-11, 25-13 and 25-22. Lazore served 11 points with five aces. LaFrance tallied seven service points, three aces and nine assists. Eubank notched five kills and five blocks.

"Jenna Tarbell had outstanding defense with 14 digs," Coach Farrell said.

Football

The football team hit the road on Sept. 24 where they built a 35-20 lead at the half then punched in 28 unanswered second half points for a 63-20 victory over Franklin Academy in Malone.

Michael Gardner gained 76 yards on 13 carries and 90 yards on five pass receptions. He also scored the final touchdown of the game.

Josh Cameron gained 278 yards on 25 carries with five touchdowns.

Quarterback Cedric Maurer went 12-18 passing for 183 yards, two of which were touchdown passes.

Malone quarterback Jordan Scharf rushed 78 yards on nine attempts with one touchdown and went 5-13 passing for 87 yards with one touchdown.

Massena will play their Hall of Fame game Oct. 1 at home against Ogdensburg.

Swimming

The Massena swimmers took an easy win over Gouverneur on Sept. 20 and a close contest against St. Lawrence three nights later.

In the Gouverneur road game, Massena won 110-60 with wins in all but two events.

Hitting the road again on Sept. 23 against St. Lawrence, Massena won 49-45. Keely Thompson-Cook was among the four-girl squad that took third in the 200-meter relay medley. She also took an individual third in the 500-meter freestyle relay.

Soccer

The girls soccer team clinched a win on the road and another at home. Maddy Mailhot with an assist from Nova Lagrow was all Massena needed for a 1-0 win over hosts Ogdensburg on Sept. 19. Mikenna Merry and Gisele Todd split netminder detail for a combined total of five saves. Callee Zulauf worked the OFA crease for eight saves.

On Sept. 22, Massena returned home for a 5-2 win over Potsdam. LaGrow booted in the first Massena goal 1:23 into the game. Kyrsten Stone in the 17th minute of the first half, with assists from LaGrow and Mailhot brought Massena to a 2-0 lead. Sophia Janoyan put Potsdam on the board before the halftime buzzer. After about 16 minutes of second half play, Stone passed to Lagrow to bring Massena to a 3-1 lead. Lauren Lucht from the Potsdam contingent less than a minute later brought Potsdam to just a one-point deficit. Mailhot got control of the ball with less than six minutes to go and brought the score to 4-2, assisted by LaGrow, with their squadmate Nicole Stenlake knocking in the third insurance goal with less than a minute on the clock. Merry tallied seven saves.

The boys soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat from visiting Ogdensburg on Sept. 21. Max Ahrens and Noah Moore scored for OFA. Casey Hooper tallied 12 saves for Massena and Justyn McCormick four for OFA.
