Massena Sports Wrap Up

It was a decent week for Massena varsity sports, with the volleyball team continuing an undefeated season, the football team taking a blowout win and victories also going to the swimming and soccer squadrons.

Volleyball

The volleyball team took 3-0 wins over Canton and Malone. In the Sept. 12 Canton contest, Tatum Lafrance notched 11 points, 15 assists, three kills and three aces. Tianna Back and Gabby Durant each had five kills. Alyssa Eubank served 15 points with four aces and four kills. Two nights later against Malone, Back, McKenzee Lazore and Eubank each served eight points. Brittney Condon served 12 points.

Football

The Massena varsity football contingent parlayed a 14-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter into a 56-22 road victory over Canton on Sept. 17.

Canton opened the game with a 79-yard kickoff return that resulted in a touchdown, followed by a second TD in the opening frame.

Massena’s Cedric Maurer threw four touchdown passes in the second quarter, in which the team fashioned 35 points. He finished the game 13-13 passing for 200 yards with six total touchdown passes.

Josh Cameron rushed 153 yards on 18 carries and had one touchdown. Nate Bressard caught all three passes thrown to him, each of which was a touchdown. Michael Brown caught two TD passes. Austin Stowell caught the other TD. Michael Gardner had an interception. Nate Bressard picked off two Canton pass attempts.

Swimming

The Massena swimmers captured a 106-64 win over hosts Potsdam on Sept. 16, placing first in nine of 11 events.

Keely Thompson-Cook teamed with Olivia Todd, Hannah Laneuville and Sydnee Carroll to claim the 200-meter freestyle relay in 2:21.52.

Sheyenne Hays (200-meter individual medley, 100-meter butterfly) and Abigail Elman (100-meter breaststroke and butterfly) each earned two individual wins. Carroll also won the 50-meter freestyle and Laneuville took the 100-meter backstroke. Laneuville, Elman, Hays and Carroll won the 200-meter medley. Hays, Elman, Kim Kaye and Rowan Mayette combined to take the 400-meter freestyle relay.

Boys Soccer

Jack Loran scored a first-half goal that proved to be the game-winner in the boys varsity soccer team’s Sept. 13 game against Gouverneur. James Martell and Andrew Underwood booted in two insurance goals in the second half. Casey Hooper made seven saves in the crease. Three nights later, Massena tied host Franklin Academy 0-0 in overtime. Hooper had six saves.

Girls Soccer

After losing 2-1 in overtime to Brushton Moira on Sept. 12, the Massena girls varsity soccer team returned to the field two days later to take a 3-1 decision over visiting Franklin Academy.

Savanah Arney put Massena on the board 7:36 into the contest. Six minutes later, Maddie Mailhot scored what held up as the game-winner. She scored the insurance goal 12 minutes into the second half. Hayley Lewis scored for Malone. Massena netminder Mikenna Merry denied nine scoring attempts.
