Massena Sports Wrap Up

Football

Both the Massena varsity boys football and girls volleyball teams have won the opening games of their 2016 seasons, with Akwesasne athletes putting forth stalwart performances on both teams. The varsity swimmers also opened their season with a win.

The Massena boys varsity football squadron earned their second win in as many games this season, defeating visiting Potsdam 10-0 at Mike Nicholas Field on Sept. 9.

Massena's defense stood tall thanks in part to a whopping 16 tackles from Michael Gardner.

On the third play of the game Gage Fiacco took a 10-yard pass from quarterback Cedric Maurer and darted 44 yards for a touchdown. Merrick Taraska kicked in the extra point. With just over two minutes to go in the first half, Taraska booted a 27-yard field goal for Massena's other three points.

Maurer passed for 76 yards and rushed 47. Josh Cameron rushed 97 yards on a dozen carries.

Gardner's 16 tackles led the defensive statistics, with Hunter Bell and Zach Ward adding eight apiece.

On the Potsdam side, Brandon Buffham rushed 73 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Cameron Talcott went 5-13 passing for 43 yards.

Massena travels to Canton for a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday, Sept. 17.

Volleyball

The volleyball contingent won a Sept. 6 contest against Gouverneur and a Sept. 8 match-up against Edwards-Knox 3-0 in each game.

Against E-K, they won the three sets 25-13, 25-12 and 25-9.

Tianna Back logged 10 service points and four digs. Mckenzee Lazore served up seven points, had six kills and 10 assists. Tatum Lafrance had 15 assists and three kills. Alyssa Eubank served 20 points, including eight aces and had five kills.

Two nights earlier at Gouverneur, Massena won the three sets 25-7, 25-12 and 25-17.

Lafrance served 15 points including three aces, with nine assists. Back had 18 service points with four kills, which Coach Magaret Farrell described as "outstanding." Eubank served 15 points with five aces and six kills.

Swimming

The swim team claimed a 65-20 win over host Edwards-Knox on Sept. 9.

Keely Thompson-Cook was among three relay contingents that took first place in one event and second place in two. By their powers combined, Thompson-Cook, Olivia Todd, Hannah Laneuville and Savannah Hays won the 200-meter medley relay in 2:16.39. Thompson-Cook also joined with Grace Favreau, Destiny Lavare and Kimberly Kaye for a 2:11.50 in the 200-meter freestyle relay, and finished the 400-meter freestyle relay in 4:53.28 on a team with Rebecca Lobdell, Lavare and Kierra Delair.
