Akwesasne Day of Action Protest in Support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

By Dale Pondysh, North Country 350 Alliance Treasurer

On Tuesday, September 13, 2016 there was a noon hour protest march from the old Fire Station in Hogansburg to the Tribal building as part of a nation wide and international "Day of Action" in support of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's fight against the North Dakota Access Pipeline being constructed across their land without their consent and any consultation, (see: Goggle: #NoDAPL Day of Action, note map shows Tuesday, Sep 13, 2016, Akw. March)

On Friday September 9, 2016, a Federal Court in Washington DC ruled against the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's request for an injunction to stop the pipeline construction work, but immediately thereafter President Barack Obama instructed three Federal Departments to order a halt in work to review the "fast track" application approval process of the pipeline work. This is a temporary work stoppage that may be only good for as long as President Barack Obama is in office, which is until the end of the year - only 3 more months. In order to obtain a permanent stoppage of construction work of the expansion of Fossil Fuel dependency, the environmental movement has joined in support of the Native American movement to address the environmental issue of Climate Change to transition off Fossil Fuels to Sustainable Energy.

Members from North Country 350.org, an environmental awareness organization co-founded by Bill McKibben of Vermont, participated in the march. The march featured traditional women singers, that sang such a beautiful song for the moment that for those who marched the moment will be forever remembered. At the end of the march, all gathered in front of the Tribal building for a photo opt that will be sent into the "central organization" coordinators of the Day of Action, which in turn will be sent to the Government decision makers to show that together there are many more people supporting the Standing Rock Sioux in this struggle.

On Line there is now many petitions asking President Barack Obama to permanently stop the North Dakota Access Pipeline, (see: Google: Stop #NoDAPL Petitions).
