The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has been receiving complaints regarding vehicles in the village of Kana:takon (St. Regis) speeding and driving without regard for the public or pedestrians. Traffic is noted to be especially dangerous at the entrance to the village and in the routes most heavily used by daily commuters on their way to and from work.
MCA would like to remind all drivers that the speed limit in the village is 40 km/h. Houses in the village are close together and close to the streets, making visibility difficult for both drivers and pedestrians. As the fall weather is approaching us and students are going to begin school soon, many children and adults may be walking and biking. Without sidewalks, drivers must use extra caution to drive safely. Drivers are also reminded to be careful when travelling in the vicinity of the Kana:takon School where children are being picked up, dropped off and are playing in the schoolyard.
Please practice safe and responsible driving to ensure the safety of all when driving in all of the districts.
