Akwesasne was represented at Standing Rock as the Lakota Sioux continue their peaceful blockade of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline. This past week SRMT Chief Ron Lafrance, SRMT Sub-Chief Cheryl Jacobs, along with Mary and Phillip Gray traveled there to offer support from the people of Akwesasne. They were warmly welcomed by Tribal leaders, Elders and protestors/protectors who updated them on the latest news of Standing Rock. While there, they participated in several ceremonies to help everyone remain strong, to give faith and to give thanks.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and Treaty Council have jointly submitted action communication to four U.N. Human Rights Special Rapporteurs. Despite objections from three federal agencies, EPA, Dept. of Interior and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, the US Army Corps of Engineers permitted construction.
A hearing on the Tribe's request for an injunction in Federal Court in Washington, DC was held on August 24, 2016. The judge will make his final decision on September 9, 2106.
Standing Rock's protest is ongoing, if you want to send support you can mail to Standing Rock, PO Box 1011, Fort Yates, ND 58538. They need camping gear, med kits, camp cooking gear, and prepaid gas cards. You can also donate directly through PayPal, (found on their official website), or on a GoFundMe site, Stand for Standing Rock NO DAPL.
