A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Akwesasne Stars did not go gently into the night nor did they go down without a fight.
The reigning Division 1 ladies champions of the Cornwall District Soccer league faced Emard Brothers Mudders last week in a semi-final series and lost both games; 5-2 on Monday, August 15, and 4-3 on Wednesday, August 17.
On Wednesday, the Stars spotted the Mudders a four goal first half lead before Taylor Francis's late goal got them on the score sheet.
In the second half Francis cut that lead in half with a mad dash toward Emard's goal. She held off two defenders while crashing the crease and scoring.
Lindsay Kennedy of the Stars brought them within one with her goal and the Akwesasne club set up a strong defense rarely allowing the Cornwall club to get past center field.
At times this game resembled the Longest Yard. Players from both sides laying on the field from collisions or a misplaced kick.
The biggest collision was between Francis and Micheala Arbie of Emards. Both stayed down, but knowing the season was on the line Francis jumped right back into the game and played hard. There were also a few twisted ankles and knees on that night.
Because of the injury stoppages the game went on until dark at the Glen Walter field. Congratulations to the Akwesasne Stars for a fine season. The other local team in the CDSL -the Lady Devils of Division 3 are off for a few weeks as they are riding their bye into the final.
