A Voice from the Eastern Door

Alex The Warrior Lazore Lacrosse Tournament

Last year we lost a very special person and last week a group of friends paid tribute to this brave child. The first ever tournament was held at the Anowarako:wa Arena and five teams helped pay tribute to the memory of Alex Lazore. The child fought and lost his battle with cancer. He was the son of Moose Lazore and Britney Truelove. In the past Lazore supported lacrosse through sponsorship of local lacrosse teams and the lacrosse community came together and gave back.

Those teams were the Hero Squad, Alex's Redmen, Manns Masters, Big Boys and Red Rockets. When it was over the Red Rockets were tournament champions as they defeated Big Boys in the final. Third place went to Hero Squad.

Although the tournament was planned for months, co-organizer Hannah Leaf said it was literally a last minute deal.

"We had four teams, at 10:00 (the night before the tournament), we got a fifth team Friday night," said Garrow.

Her co-organizer was BJ Lazore and Garrow said it ran very well.

"Good turnout, next year will be better."

She said S & S Motorsports really came through and provided the first place award money. The tournament was also sponsored by LOK Creations. They had a booth in the lobby and they provided t-shirt designs.

The championship game was between Big Boys and Red Rockets, which was a thoroughly even game with neither team pulling ahead by more than three goals. In the end the Rockets won 10-8.

It was a successful first year tournament and it was a fitting tribute to a brave fighter, Alex The Warrior Lazore.

Alex's mother Britney Truelove is still raising money and awareness in memory of Alex, who lost his brave battle with brain cancer last December. She had a donation jar at the lacrosse tournament to raise money for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) where baby Alex underwent treatment during his courageous fight. Several other fundraisers were held including some after his passing, which were in his memory.
