A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Family Support Program hosted a picnic for their clients on Seskeha/August 17, 2016. Hosted at Akwesasne's Generations Park, the picnic provided an opportunity for the program's staff to strengthen relationships with their clients in a more informal setting, as well as to enjoy a beautiful summer's day. The day-long event also provided respite service to client's family members, so they can better meet the needs of their loved ones.
The Family Support Program is overseen by the Tribe's Division of Community and Family Services (DCFS) and has nearly 70 clients in Akwesasne. Their trained staff help provide assistance, care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities. The program strives to improve their client's overall quality of life--enabling them to live independent and fulfilling lives as vital members of the community.
The Program offers community-based services; such as employment and living skills, as well as opportunities for their clients to participate in community events and activities. They also provide referrals for counseling, training and other resources to family members who provide primary care for an individual with a developmental disability.
The Family Support Program is located at 420 State Route 37 (adjacent to the Community Building) and can be reached at (518) 358-9481.
