A Voice from the Eastern Door
On Sunday, August 21 the Akwesasne Freedom School held the Annual Quilt Auction & Dinner. Despite the rain showers, local community members and visitors from surrounding areas came to came out to show their support by bidding on beautiful quilts varying in size, pattern and color. Attendees also had the chance to enjoy a steak and cornbread dinner and had the opportunity to take part in the silent auction, which was held inside the school with beautiful items donated by parents and students who attend the Kanienkeha language immersion school, running in its 38th year of operation. With Sunday's rainy weather the quilt auction was pushed up to a 11 am, with an original scheduled start time of 1 pm. This caused some minor changes to the scheduled entertainment of the day. Vendors were also set up throughout the two-day event, selling their cultural handcrafted items. The survival race on Saturday, also filled with food, entertainment and vendors kicked off the school's largest, two day, parent run fundraising event.
