REGINALD "REG" MITCHELL

AKWESASNE- Reginald "Reg" Mitchell, 81, of 1344 River Road, peacefully passed away on Friday night, July 22, 2016, at the Cornwall Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Reg was born January 5, 1935, in St. Regis, Quebec, son of the late Daniel and Christie King Mitchell. He attended schools in Snye and St. Regis. Reg married Winifred Arquette on July 5, 1954 at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Jacobs officiating. He owned and operated Mitchell's Confectionary in Snye, retiring after 43 years of business. Prior to that he worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway, and demolition in Syracuse at the PalNec Wrecking. He was also on the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Housing Department, retiring after 23 years.

Reginald was a member of the St. Regis Catholic Church, the Kateri Circle, and the Father Michael K. Jacobs Knights of Columbus Council 10423, and was a 4th degree Knight. He was a founding member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group. He belonged to the Snye Recreation Committee where he was also one of the founding members, and is an exempt, founding member of the Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department, Station 3.

Reg was an avid antique car collector, and belonged to the Malone Car Club as well as the Trail Blazers Skidoo Club. He and Winifred were 2011 Winter Carnival King and Queen. He enjoyed car shows, going to numerous flea markets, and travelling, covering all the states and Mexico. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed the river where they had a camp on Cow Island.

Reg is survived by his wife of 62 years, Winifred; his children, Richard and Liz Mitchell; Roger and Cathy Mitchell; Romaine and Bonnie Mitchell; and Randy and Cecelia Mitchell, all of Snye; Roseann and Louis "Terry" Terrance of Hogansburg; and Rebecca Mitchell of Snye; 12 grandchildren, Carson, Tyson, Josh, Taylor, Amanda, Justin, Keri-Ann, Alana, Wesley, Owen, Samantha and Lindsay; 13 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild; two chosen daughters, Elvera Sargent and Vanessa LaVare; and two god children, William Sunday and Earl Arquette; his sister in law, Marjorie King; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Russell "Hoss" Mitchell, on January 17, 2007; and two brothers, Simon King and Peter Mitchell.

Friends called at the Homemakers in Snye from Monday until Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday at the St. Regis Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hogansburg, at the convenience of the family.
