A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Seaway Valley Venom may have lost the second game of the season, but it resulted in their first touchdown scored as a franchise.
Meanwhile, an injury leads to an Akwesasne man rejoining the team's ranks. He is the second Mohawk player on their roster.
The Venom dropped a 12-6 game to the Mohawk Valley Titans on July 16 at the Massena High School turf field.
Early in the second quarter, capping off a long drive that began in the opening frame, Corey Campeau on first and goal from the five-yard line scampered, took a handoff and scampered around the left side into the end zone.
"I feel like we are getting better every week and now the next step for us is to win," Coach Elijah Winfrey said.
On their last drive of the game, the Venom took the ball from their 20 to the Titans' 29, which included a 26-yard spring from quarterback Abe Gravell. While threatening to tie the bout and force overtime, Gravell passed but was intercepted with just 14 seconds on the clock.
"I'm still proud of my guys. Last season we wouldn't have even had a chance to be in the position to win the game," Winfrey said.
The game resulted in running back Dakota Vallance taking a hard hit that fractured his collarbone and shoulder. Winfrey says his season may be over.
In his stead, the team brought out Demetri Lafrance of Akwesasne, who ran 24 yards on seven carries. He also plays linebacker, where he assisted one tackle.
Randy Peters of Akwesasne, who plays lineman, finished the game with a solo tackle on the defensive side plus significant playtime on offensive line.
Gravell went six for 15 passing for 26 yards with three interceptions. He rushed 81 yards on 13 tries.
Running back Caleb Gomes went 36 yards on seven carries and Campeau carried six times for 10 yards, along with his touchdown. Cody Locey rushed two yards. Vallance lost three yards on one try and Matt Shatraw, wide receiver, lost 13 yards on one attempt.
On the receiving end, Vallance had one catch for 10 yards. Shatraw went 10 yards on two catches. Kyle Quensel had one reception for nine yards. Nick Steenkamer lost three yards on two catches.
On defense, Locey had three solo tackles. Gravell had four and assisted two. Cornerback Devon Daley had two solo tackles. Evan Mannix (defensive end) and Quensel each had a solo tackle. Gomes had a solo tackle and two assisted. Linebacker Cody Hartle had one each, solo and assisted. Cody Jones, Todd Sharlow, Shatraw and Kenneth Singletary each had single assisted tackles. James Snyder had two assisted tackles.
Kick returner Randall Ball ran back once for 10 yards. Kicker Mike Horth missed an extra point attempt.
The Venom have an off week before traveling to Watertown to face the Red and Black on July 30 at 7 p.m.
