QUESTIONS FOR LYME DISEASE CONTEST

1. What is the name of the ticks that are found in Ontario and Quebec?

Answer: They are called blacklegged ticks or deer ticks.

2. How long can an infected tick be attached to a person before it can spread Lyme disease?

Answer: An infected tick can be attached to a person for 24 to 36 hours.

3. Developing a red, circular rash (bull’s-eye rash) may or may not develop after being bitten by an infected tick. What other symptoms may a person get after being bitten by an infected tick?

Answer: Flu-like symptoms including fatigue, chills, fever, headache, muscle and joint pain and swollen lymph nodes.

4. Where would you find ticks?

Answer: They are found in wooded areas, tall grass, low lying bushes, shrub, forests, or in our backyard.

5. How would you protect yourself from tick bites?

Answer:

a) Using insect repellent containing DEET.

b) Wear light colored clothing, so you can see the ticks

c) Long sleeves

d) Shirts tucked in long pants tucked into your socks and closed footwear

e) Check yourself for ticks

f) A quick shower may remove any ticks not yet attached

6. How do you remove a tick?

Answer:

a) Use a fine-tipped tweezers to remove a tick.

b) Firmly grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible

c) With a steady motion pull the tick’s body away from your skin

d) Put the tick or ticks in a small sealed plastic container, sandwich bag or an old medicine bottle. Take it to the Community Health or one of the clinics, AMC or KMC and they will be shipped out to Brantford, Ont. May take 3 weeks for the results to return.

e) Once the tick has been removed, wash site with soap and warm water, clean the tweezers.

f) Make sure that you see a health provider who may put you on an antibiotic.

7. Can you use homemade remedies to release ticks from your skin?

Answer: No, this may cause tick to inject more bacteria into your body, increasing risk of infection.

8. What can you do to keep ticks out of your yard?

Answer:

a) Mow grass, shrubs and plants and clear leafy areas that ticks love.

b) Elevate wood piles and bird feeders, keeping tick-carrying mice and rodents away.

c) Create barriers between yard and woods. Ticks are unlikely to cross 3-foot barriers of mulch or gravel.
