Akwesasne For Attawapiskat Makes Delivery

On Saturday, May 21, 2016 the volunteers of Akwesasne for Attawapiskat had reached their first milestone in the commitment to helping another community in need. Over 25 volunteers had worked for weeks gathering donations of light bulbs, baby diapers, books, toiletries, laundry soap, and many more items. Everyday items - that we take for granted yet cost five times their cost in northern communities like Attawapiskat.

Donation locations were set up, including the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club, where volunteers had gathered on Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20, to pack and load a cube van and head to Ottawa. There the donations were reloaded for shipment and flight to Attawapiskat. The truck rental fees were a donation from U-Haul. The Annie and Friends Foundation secured free shipping through Cree Air.

Donations came in from individuals, families, business owners, MCA departments, and churches. The Holy Trinity Church in Cornwall contacted Akwesasne for Attawapiskat and made a generous donation of baby and laundry products. Floanne Benedict, Sesi Herne, Lacey Herne, Myra Benedict and Ronni Sunday were instrumental in organizing and gathering donations for Akwesasne For Attawapiskat. The group will continue to fundraise throughout the summer and this past Wednesday, May 25, 2016 they held a concession stand with proceeds going for shipping costs.
