Massena Sports Roundup

Massena boy's varsity lacrosse bettered their 2016 record to 12-2 with three consecutive blowout wins.

On Thursday, May 12, they defeated visiting Potsdam 22-1.

Kianen Francis led Massena with seven goals and one assist. Nick Henrie had two goals and eight assists. Kendrick Angus and Isaiah Cree each notched hat tricks. Gage Fiacco scored two goals. Montana Pierce, Jack Loran, JP Chauvin and Matt Deroucher netted singletons. Tyler Armstrong denied nine shots. Mason Panuelo covered the net for the last eight minutes, making one save.

For Potsdam, Sam Woods scored and Kaleb Rathbun assisted. In the net, Jake Crary had 10 saves and Major McKinley eight.

Two nights earlier, Massena defeated host Ogdensburg 25-6.

Montana Pierce, Jack Loran and Cree came through offensively with three goals each. Henrie (two assists), Sunday and Cameron Frost scored twice. Angus and Todd each scored once with two helpers. Chauvin and Cameron Plourde each scored solo goals. Jake Sheets assisted two plays. Gage Fiacco logged one assist. Armstrong and Panuelo each logged single saves.

For OFA, Ed Swan scored twice, and Noah Strader, Isaac Testani, Jacob Adner and Aiden Putman all scored once. Nick Snyder made four saves and Chris Bromley made three in a split goalkeeping effort.

On Monday, May 9, Massena won over Saranac Lake 19-3. Francis, with four assists, and Henrie led the offense with five goals each. Angus netted three goals. Cree tallied two and two helpers. Blake Premo, Loran, Sunday and Fiacco all scored once. Pierce assisted a trio of plays. Chauvin and Dylan Mullin had single helpers. Armstrong blocked nine shots. Panuelo manned the crease in the fourth quarter for one save.

For Saranac Lake, Hayden Hartman scored twice. JB Chapin scored once. Ward Walton manned the net for 18 saves.

Softball

The Massena varsity softball team belted out two more wins over Salmon River and Potsdam, improving their record to 8-5.

On Thursday, May 12, they pulled a 9-2 win over hosts Salmon River.

After a 2-2 tie, Massena drove in three runs in the third, then sent four more runners to home plate in the fourth, which also included four Salmon River errors.

Massena's Amber Thomas pitched for the win, allowing six hits, walking one and fanning five.

On offense, Brittany Streeter and Kelly Southwick each batted a single and a double. Sydnee Carroll had a two-run home run. Alyssa Eubank, Reaghan Peets and Camryn Peets each hit singles.

Brittany Brooks was notched a loss for Salmon River. She allowed 10 hits, walked three and struck out four.

Tiffany Conners led the way offensively with two hits. Brooks batted a double. Tsiiowisonte Laffin, Kera Ghostlaw and Lauren Martin each connected for single hits.

In a five-inning game on Monday, May 9, Massena defeated visiting Potsdam 20-4.

After trading first-at-bat runs, Massena drove in eight runs in their second trip to the plate, which they tailed with a seven-run fourth inning.

On the mound, Reaghan Peets threw for a win. She struck out six and gave up six hits with no walks. Carroll went 3-4 at the plate and scored three times. Eubank had three hits, a double and two runs scored. Carly Amo hit the ball twice and scored twice. Abbey Paduano had a single and two runs. Southwick scored three times. Streeter and Camryn Peets each scored twice.

Hunter Wilson pitched for the loss. Brooke Moore had a double and scored twice. Mackenzie Martin went 3-3 with a double and a run. Wilson had a double and crossed home once. Faithanne Deshane had one hit.

Baseball

The Massena varsity baseball team recently overcame three opponents to boost their season record to 9-7.

On Monday, May 9, they won over visiting Potsdam 3-1. Massena pulled ahead 2-0 through four innings before giving up a single Potsdam run in the sixth, which they immediately answered.

Nate Bressard earned a win with five strikeouts, two walks and allowing three hits. At the bat, Ethan Marcello had a single, scored once and drove in an RBI. James Donnelly had a triple and a run. Cody Peets had an RBI single. Tyler Flynn had two hits. Bailey LaBarge scored once.

Connor Prosper was tagged with a loss, with eight strikeouts, five hits allowed and no walks. James Robinson batted a single and scored twice. Ted Rice hit a double. David Lucht had a single.

The following evening, Massena downed host Gouverneur 6-4. Massena was down 3-0 in the top of the fourth when they came through with a four-run rally. Nick McKeel pitched the first four innings for the win. He allowed five hits. Merrick Taraska relieved him, fanning two with no walks and allowing two hits.

Donnelly led Massena batters with two hits, including a two-out, three-run double that opened the game-saving rally in the fourth inning. He also scored once. Marcello had a single, two runs and an RBI. Taraska had two hits. Peets had a single and scored the game-winning run.

For Gouverneur, Dylan Gibson tossed eight strikeouts, three walks and allowed eight hits. Braden Fenlong went 2-3 at the plate with a two-run single and a run scored. Devon Mattice, who went 2-4, drove in one run.

On Wednesday, May 11, Massena narrowly slipped past visiting Salmon River 6-5.

LaBarge had four RBIs. Peets had a single and a run. Alex Rusaw had a single, run scored and an RBI. Taraska and Donnelly each had a single and crossed home plate once. Marcello connected for a single and a double.

Golf

Massena's golf squadron recently added two more wins to their now 7-1 season record.

On Friday, May 13, they posted their best score of the year so far with a 216-253 win over Ogdensburg.

Playing the par-35 back nine, Jake Amo led the way for host Massena with a 39, including a birdie on the par-four 11th hole. Dylan Tyo shot a 42, including a birdie on the par-five 14th hole. Shane Tarbell and Terrell Thomas each recorded 43s, with Tarbell sinking a birdie on the 11th hole. Ben Sprague scored 49. Ivan Delosh tallied a non-scoring 50.

For OFA, Jake VanHouse shot a team-best 46, Garrett Bell 47, Noah Moore 52, Ben Hammond 55, Coby Ryan 56 and Ryan Lanfear a non-scoring 64.

On Monday, May 9, Massena defeated hosts Potsdam 227-242.

Jake Amo scored the team low with a 40. Thomas notched a 42 and Tarbell 47. Delosh and Dylan Amo each sunk 49. Ben Chilton had a non-scoring 50.

For Potsdam Charlie Helenbrook shot a 43, Carson Regan 44, Riley Clark 50, Kobe Phillips 52, Nolan Towne 53 and Kenny Eurto a non-scoring 57.

Girls Lacrosse

The Massena girl's varsity lacrosse contingent improved their 2016 overall record to 8-4 with victories over Heuvelton and Salmon River.

Prior to their Monday, May 9 home game against Heuvelton, they recognized four graduating team members: Devin Kelly, Abby LaClair, Raechel Davis and Maddi Dillabough.

After taking the field, Massena fought their way to a 7-1 lead at the half and never lost their footing to claim the contest 14-4. Kyrsten Stone fired in five goals and assited two plays. Devin Kelly scored three times and had a single assist. Dillabough, with one assist, and Cayla Hiknley each scored twice. Abigail Johnson netted a singleton. Gisele Todd covered the net, denying 11 Heuvelton scoring chances.

On Friday, May 13, Massena took down host Salmon River 9-4. The teams battled it out through the first half with Massena coming out ahead 5-4. Massena returned to the field to slam in four unanswered goals. Kelly was the top scorer with three goals and two assists. Johnson scored twice. Stone had a goal and a helper. LaClair, Katelyn Kennedy and Dillabough each scored once. Todd made six saves in the net.

Marietta Jock, Tatyana Papineau, Avery Benedict and Jadie Burns scored for Salmon River. Dava Thompson backstopped for 11 saves.
