A Voice from the Eastern Door

The SRCS 2016 Junior Prom, A Night in New York

Salmon River High School students and prom guests made their grand entrance on Saturday, May 14, 2016 with girls wearing pretty gowns and classic up-dos and boys looking snappy in their sharp tuxedos. The high school cafeteria was transformed into a magical skyline of New York City complete with a Statue of Liberty.

Every table was covered with a pure white tablecloth; a vase with marbles and flowers in various shades of purple graced the center of each table. The chairs were wrapped in a white cover accented with a purple bow. Large purple tissue flowers decorated the walls and doorways. Small clear lights wrapped in purple tulle decorated with flowers laid on the window sills to give off a nice soft glow. Small lights on the floor provided a lighted path to the dance floor where at the top stood a lighted New York City Skyline.

Students danced well into the night to the music of DJ Bernie Brown of Wheels of Steel. Large group dances such as the Cha Cha Slide and Cupid Shuffle populated the dance floor as well as some dance offs. There were always large groups of dancers on the dance floor throughout the night.

Promptly at 10:30 p.m., the long awaited crowning of the prince and princess as well as king and queen began. Each member of prom court was given a sash and a foil covered rose. Once everyone had their rose, the foil was removed to reveal the color. The male and female who uncovered a red rose were declared royals. With roses in hand Myles Jacobs and Nidia Dearmayero were crowned Prince and Princess while Zach Smith and Konwahonkarawi Porter were crowned 2016 Prom King and Queen. A slow dance followed with the new royalty in the middle. The Seniors also presented Mrs. Darcy Tyo, English teacher, Junior Class Advisor and prom organizer, beautiful flowers to show their appreciation of her dedication and friendship for the last eleven years. Mrs. Tyo will be stepping down as Junior Class Advisor this year.

Junior Prom Court members were Colin Benedict, Ali Hart, Tyson Thomas, Marietta Jock, Myles Jacobs, Wraven Sunday, Kurt Leroux, Tiffany Conners, Tanner Tarbell and Nidia Dearmayero while Jordan Bigness, Antoine Domino, Zach Smith, Molly McDonald, Caroline Russell, Alan Jacobs, Lauren Perkins, Quinn Armstrong, Konwahonkarawi Porter, Brittany Brooks, Karhatiron Perkins and Mia Arnold made up the Senior Prom Court.

As the prom came to a close, juniors, sophomores and even freshmen helped the senior students make the last big 'hurrah' before graduation, a night that will be remembered and cherished.
