A Voice from the Eastern Door

Mr. Anthony TJ Jackson has been a local performer and a life-long musician in Akwesasne. He began his musical career practicing in basements and garages throughout St. Regis. He started a young group called the Junior Mohawks and later stepped up to drum for the Little River Mohawks and then formed the TJ Jackson Band and later Mohawk Pride. However, he was part of many groups and would always step in whenever needed whether it was playing drums, bass, guitar or singing. He was multi-talented artist that also wrote and recorded his own music. His first album was self-titled "TJ Jackson" and most recently the album "Can You Hear the Distant Drums." A visit to the gates of Graceland in the Early 90's sparked a flicker in TJ's spirit that never left him. In 2006, at an Elvis Tribute artist competition he began his path on his next adventure. His focus became Elvis tribute performance, which he worked on tirelessly to perfect. With the support of his partner Daphne and his family, he performed at many an event. TJ not only supported and performed for many an occasion throughout Akwesasne he could be frequently found in our surrounding communities. He made Cornwall his home and was part of many of the local functions there. He was a regular performer for the local clubs, fundraisers and benefits as well as his own yearly show out of his garage for the neighbors. This was not the extent of his popularity though, his ETA competitions took him to Lake George, California, Tweed and Collingwood where the largest competitions were held and he always placed in the top ranking winners. He entertained so many and truly was loved by his adoring fans far and wide. His sudden passing on May 6, 2016 has left a family grieving and a community in disbelief. He will be sadly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him and that have enjoyed his music.
