A Voice from the Eastern Door
A portion of the water main along Route 37 will be replaced, announced the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Department of Planning & Infrastructure.
"We anticipate a start date of May 9, 2016, and the work to last four or five months," said Director of Planning & Infrastructure Ernie Thompson.
The work will involve excavation where the water main exists, replacing the main, hydrants and gate valves. The main will be replaced from around the Tribal Police Station to Sweet Flag and Iroquois Village. (See map)
"The public can expect traffic slowdowns, construction vehicles and possible short interruption in water services. There will possibly be digging in lawns to the water shut offs, but not all the way to the houses," added Thompson.
For water shut-offs, people will be given a one-day notice and water interruption will last a few hours.
The need to replace the water main in this area is because of numerous main breaks.
"We have recorded up to 15 breaks over the last eight years. The mains in this area are upwards of 40 years old," said Thompson.
The project will cost approximately $1.6 million, with $600,000 from HUD and $1 million from the Tribal General Fund.
Stark's Gravel & Excavation will be doing the work. The work will start on the east end of the main route and move west. (See map)
