ELAINE G. "SKAWANEHTSI" "Lanie" CASTOR

AKWESASNE – Elaine G. "Lanie" Castor, 65, Bear Clan, of 49 County Route 45, formerly of Racquette Point, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Massena Memorial ER, surrounded by her family, after a brief illness.

Elaine was born August 22, 1950, at the family home in Akwesasne, daughter of the late Antione H. and Ann Cook Barnes. She attended the St. Regis Mohawk School, graduating from Salmon River Central School and later from Mater Dei College. She married Wayne C. Castor on June 18, 1983 at the Akwesasne Freedom School with Justice St. Hillaire officiating. Wayne predeceased her on September 15, 2005.

Lanie was a Certified Licensed NYS Dental Assistant with St. Regis Mohawk Health Services, retiring on February 1, 2016. She had previously worked for MCA Daycare, and was an EMT. As a dental assistant, she was a member of DANB, Dental Assisting National Board.

She enjoyed reading, quilting, sewing, baking with her granddaughters, and watching her family play sports. She also enjoyed going to Powwows with her granddaughter and daughter-in-law, and antique shopping with her sisters. Lanie was especially fond of her time at the Barnes Beach.

Elaine is survived by her two sons, Peter and Natasha Barnes, and Kevin Castor, all of Akwesasne; three chosen sons, Jordan Lauzon, Logan Kane and Wahiie Jacobs; three grandchildren, Nya, Naliyah and Brenna Barnes; three sisters, Carolyn White-Lomber and her husband Gary; Leona Barnes, and Marjorie Skidders, all of Akwesasne; and four brothers, James and Robin Barnes of Akwesasne; Tony Jr. and Vicki Barnes of Las Vegas; Floyd "Beaver" Barnes of Akwesasne; and Brian and Amie Barnes of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Elaine was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Barnes on July 1, 2012; her niece, Katsitsientha Annie Barnes on August 18, 2009; and her brother-in-law, Brian Skidders on October 6, 2002.

Friends called at the home of her sister Marjorie Skidders from Monday until the time of service on Wednesday. Memorial donations may be made in Lanie's memory to the Akwesasne Cancer Support Group.
