AKWESASNE – Mrs. Cecelia "Sadie" Peters, 96, of 76 Park Street, St. Regis peacefully passed away early Thursday morning, February 11, 2016 at Tsiionkwanonhso:te – Cornwall Island Long Term Care Facility. She had been a resident there since November 9, 2015.
Sadie was born November 28, 1919 in St. Regis, Quebec, the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Munroe Smoke. She attended schools in St. Regis. After her retirement she went back to school and earned her High School Diploma and obtained her driver's license. On November 24, 1936, she married David E. Peters at the St. Regis Catholic Church. He predeceased her on October 1, 1988.
Sadie was a chambermaid for the Sheraton in Syracuse, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. She was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and truly loved to line dance, read, paint by number, and do crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed traveling, having visited Hawaii twice, the Grand Canyon, Mexico, Las Vegas, Branson, New York City, and Nashville.
She is survived by her daughters, Annette Jacobs of Kahnawake; Patricia and Morley Cook of Minoa; and Josephine Jacobs of St. Regis; 8 grandchildren, Lois, Kathy, Donna, Clint, David, Joey, Geoffrey, and Brandon; 16 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She was predeceased her sisters, Mary Mitchell, Ann Curleyhead, Theresa Terrance, and Louise Johnson; and her brothers, Angus and Louis Smoke.
Friends called on Saturday and Sunday at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating. Burial will be in the spring in Kateri Cemetery, Akwesasne.
