Akwesasne's Best Homemade Chili and Biscuit Contest

Thursday's mid-day frigid temperatures kept community members inside with the Akwesasne's Best Homemade Chili and Biscuit Contest. Rhonda Gray, Iakhihsohtha Activity Department, was on site at the Lodge to guide judging. About 20 community members came out to participate in the judging of Akwesasne's best chili and biscuit dishes.

In the activity room of Iakhihsohtha Lodge, one table was lined with chili in crock-pots, while the other table was lined with some of Akwesasne's best looking and tasting biscuits. In total there were seven unique chili dishes that were submitted by Donna Mitchell, Jean Diabo, Mona Via, Debbie Jacobs, Johanne Jackson, Elaine Lazore and Eric Montour. In the biscuit category there were also seven competitors who included Everett Lazore, Theresa Cook, Johanne Jackson, Jerry Jackson, Elaine Lazore, Lorraine Bero and Jean Diabo.

Chili and fresh biscuit aromas filled the activity room while judges stood in line to get a taste. Chili flavors ranged from citrusy to cheesy and spicy. Each biscuit flavor was also distinct, but in the end the decision came down to the judge's preference. In the end, the judges determined that Donna Mitchell had the tastiest chili, while Jerry Jackson took the number one position for the yummiest biscuits.
