The Massena Lady Raiders hold onto second place in Section 10 girls hockey, with a 4-1 league record and 13-2 overall, just a game behind Canton.
The squadron won two of three recent games, and used one of them to raise money for a severely sick classmate.
On Jan. 9, the team won 5-4 over Skaneateles, which was their "Strides for Steph" fundraiser. The team garnered $2,000 for Stephanie McKeel, an MCS senior with cystic fibrosis who is awaiting a double lung transplant. They wore purple jerseys in honor of McKeel, and also held fundraisers throughout the evening.
The game opened with the Raiders quickly jumping ahead to 4-0, but later had to quell a Skaneateles comeback.
Amber Thomas opened the scoreboard at 1:48, unassisted. KC Herne then scored two in a row, each unassisted, which were 37 seconds apart. Abbey Paquin notched the fourth goal at 5:15 in the second period, assisted by Maddy Mailhot and Herne.
The competition recovered with four straight goals at the end of the second period and early in the third, before Amber Thomas took a pass from Claire Tyo and Bailey Thomas with 8:53 to go for the game-winner. Kyrsten Stone kept 40 shots out of the Massena net.
The following evening, Massena fell 6-3 to Clinton. Abbey Paduano scored early for Massena at 7:43 with an assist from Shaughnessy LaClair and Giselle Todd. Herne scored with 11 seconds in the frame, assisted by Molly O'Connell and Paquin.
Clinton knocked in three straight goals in the second period, before Paquin tied the contest with 40 seconds to go in the third period. Clinton answered with three goals in sudden death, securing their win. Stone blocked 16 shots.
On Wednesday, Jan. 5 Massena shutout St. Lawrence Central 6-0. Goals came from Amber Thomas, Claire Tyo, LaClair and O'Connell. Herne scored twice.
Stone blocked seven shots. Camryn Peets took over net detail late in the game and denied four scoring attempts.
