A Voice from the Eastern Door
The 2015 Akwesasne Jr. B Indians Lacrosse team has had the most successful year ever in lacrosse, bringing home the coveted Founders Cup Nation Title Trophy. For years it has been the target of the Indians as epitomizing the best Jr. Lacrosse team in the nation.
We have built a team over the last several years and had come so close in 2012 when we won the Silver medal in an extremely close match against Six Nation Rebels. This year we beat the Rebels out to great fanfare and encouragement from our Community. That success propelled us because of such an awesome fan base, the best that any team could ever hope to have!
We continued on, and knocked off every opponent until the final game against the Seneca War Chiefs. They wanted to win just as bad as we did, and in overtime the Akwesasne Jr. B Indians succeeded and won the game solidifying their first ever Founders Cup Trophy.
Without the support of our generous community, the fans, and of course all of the local businesses that supported us, all of monetary contributions made our trip to the National Title a resounding success.
We recognize the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council for their generous support, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the Akwesasne Convenience Store Association, Carey Terrance and the Terrance Family, many businesses and jersey sponsors such as Bears Den, #9 and #9 Truck Stop, Akwesasne Sports, T-19, Purple Ribbon, Butters Quick Stop, St. Regis Rec, Dr. Dubuc, Seaway Chev, Cadillac, Buick, GMC Ltd., Swamps Performance, Ongweoeh Corp, Kambry’s Smoothies, The UPS Store, Pommier Jewellers, Host Hotel, Cedar View, Lazore’s Tree Removal, Thomas Marina, DTC Construction, Akwesasne Mini Mart, Mohawk Junction, J & J Insurance, Kastowah Gas, Saint Boys, CKON, Akwesasne TV and a special thank you to the late Gloria Thompson.
To our helpers: Thank you to Curly, Cheyenne, Ang, Buggo, Kenda, Darrell George, Julieanne Skidders, Laurie Gardner for her computer and photographic work, Joe Francis for the awesome pictures, Renee at the Tribal Police, the Tribal Police for their help in the Boot Drive, Alex for the use of the bus whenever we needed it and Garrett Cree for building the foundation of this winning team, to the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Banquette Cooridnator Vicky for putting on the banquet for the players and families.
Our appreciation to the staff and management of our team, the coaches, trainers, the staff and management of the A’nowarako:wa Arena, the referees who helped us keep our cool and focused on what it takes to win a National Title, and everyone who contributed to our success we will forever be grateful to you. A special thank you to the members of the Akwesasne Lacrosse Hall of Fame for the recognition of our Championship Team.
Thank you to our fan base, those who spent endless hours waiting to get to the game, those who braved and travelled with us on the many out of town trips, those who supported us by simply buying a ticket to attend a game, you are the reason we continue to succeed.
To all of our families and friends for keeping us focused on the National Title. Without you and your love for us and the game of lacrosse we could not have done it without you. We may have played and won the Trophy but in reality it is a Trophy that belongs to each and every one of you.
We are proud to have played the Creator’s game for you and our community, and will continue to strive to be the best that we can be. Your inspiration and guidance to us as lacrosse players is hard to put into words, but we hope that in some small way bringing the National Tittle of the Founders Cup Home to Akwesasne demonstrates: We Listened, We Care and We are One.
Thank you for a very successful season,
The Jr. B Indian Lacrosse Team, Founders Cup National Champions, and from Management, Will Whelan and Roy Ledoux
